After losing Game 5 last Friday, Indiana must do everything they can in Thursday’s Game 6 at Paycom Center to avoid further disaster. TJ McConnell must step up as MVP if Indiana hopes to pull off an upset victory and advance.
He notched the only three-pointer for his team and put in an outstanding second half performance, yet his most essential contribution came on defense.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Shaivonte Gilgeous-Alexander, better known by his initials SGA, has emerged as one of the premier guards in the NBA this season. Oklahoma City Thunder are counting on SGA to lead them towards their inaugural title win; their game against Indiana Pacers on April 27 will be pivotal and SGA will play a pivotal role.
Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.4 points per game during the regular season and led his team into the playoffs, where he scored 50 points in Game 1 of the finals against Golden State Warriors despite that performance losing the series in seven games.
Gilgeous-Alexander committed six turnovers in Game 3, an unusually high total for an NBA star like him. To combat this trend, the Pacers modified their pick-and-roll defense further away from him in order to disrupt his rhythm.
However, the Pacers were able to stay close with Oklahoma City in the second half and eventually take control of the game. When tied at 108-107 with two seconds remaining in regulation play, SGA drove for a basket with two seconds left and sent it into overtime – an act which will forever be remembered and made him a superstar player.
Jalen Williams
Jalen Williams was instrumental in keeping the Pacers competitive throughout this game. His presence made the Thunder struggle in the paint while hitting some 3-pointers and playing solid defense – the team looked much improved when he was on the court and his presence is an invaluable addition to this young offense.
Following their loss in Game 1, the Pacers needed a victory at home against OKC Thunder to take back control of the series and Tyrese Haliburton was there to provide that spark; driving hard towards basket and even dishing off an incredible pass to Pascal Siakam for an essential basket made his presence felt. His no-look pass to Siakam for a go ahead bucket made a statement!
SGA was an integral player for the Thunder, and is poised to play a vital role in their quest for glory in this Finals run. Averaging nearly 30 points during these playoffs alone has proved his readiness for his moment in the spotlight; now is their time! SGA must continue playing well if they hope to come away victorious from this series.
Chet Holmgren
Chet Holmgren was instrumental to the Thunder’s win in Game 6. Although his contributions may not have made headlines in terms of statistics, his impact is evident: He played an instrumental role in helping them maintain a double digit lead throughout the night thanks to his smothering defense that caused the Pacers’ offense many issues on both ends and prevented points being scored by them. Plus he grabbed 11 rebounds! Overall Chet’s contributions contributed greatly towards today’s victory for Oklahoma City!
Oklahoma City Thunder returned with much momentum after their victory in Indiana on Friday, maintaining the same energy and desperation to take an early 3-2 series lead, thanks to Jalen Williams’ 40 point performance in Game 5.
After struggling to maintain their lead due to poor play from Tyrese Haliburton and Andrew Nembhard, Holmgren made key contributions towards keeping them ahead. Hartenstein started two games of the series before being replaced by Holmgren as the starting center.
2022 second overall pick PJ Tucker proved his ability to make an immediate impactful presence in the NBA this season, playing all 82 regular season games for Oklahoma City Thunder while averaging 16.1 points and 7.7 rebounds on an average basis in those contests.
Alex Caruso
Caruso makes an impactful contribution that often goes unnoticed: smart passing, pinpoint spotting up well, cutting and screening for others; as well as not taking away anything offensively from his team’s defensive unit – with advanced statistics — such as secondary “hockey” assists — often favoring him.
The Thunder have been an impressive defensive team all season. Sure, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams may make headlines, but their defense is what has set them apart and kept their opponents at bay in Game 6. And Game 6 proved no exception; their defense held up its end of the bargain to ensure Thunder victory.
Now they’ll face an insurmountable challenge at home, where they have only lost two games all season. Now is their opportunity to seal out this series and bring championship glory back home to Oklahoma City.
Caruso has been instrumental in Oklahoma City Thunder’s playoff run this season. His presence off the bench, disrupting passing lanes and making life difficult for opponents on the wing has been invaluable to their victory. At 31 years old – an NBA Championship veteran himself – Caruso provides invaluable experience that is helping train young Thunder players.
