National Sports Day began as an initiative of Major Dhyan Chand, more popularly known as ‘The Hockey Wizard.’ Celebrated annually since 2012, National Sports Day marks a day to unite and recognize our athletes while inspiring a new generation. Grandeur and grassroots enthusiasm come together to create an infectious buzz on National Sports Day that spreads throughout our nation.
Nationwide, Indian schools and colleges host interschool and intercollege competitions and sports festivals designed to encourage participation across various disciplines. Cities and towns host marathons, fitness camps, workshops led by renowned coaches and athletes; marathons take place within towns themselves. At a national level, the President of India presents prestigious awards such as Khel Ratna (formerly Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award), Arjuna Awards and Dronacharya Awards to recognize sporting achievements by Indian athletes.
As part of National Sports Day celebrations, everyone can get involved by engaging in physical activity and trying out challenging games that may seem unfamiliar to them. They can also show their support to local athletes by attending sporting events and cheering them to victory; their cheers can become driving forces that propel athletes toward higher achievements while reminding them that they aren’t alone on their journeys. Your active involvement leaves an indelible imprint of National Sports Day that leaves an impactful legacy within sports world – which helps embodied athletes achieve the greatness they were meant to achieve!
