Tyrese Maxey proved her worth in Joel Embiid’s absence by scoring 21 points on three of six 3-point attempts – only for poor defensive play in the final minutes to cost Boston the game.
On a key possession, an inbound pass intended for Jaylen Brown fell instead into Kelly Oubre Jr’s hands; who converted an offensive foul putback for victory.
Derrick White
White recorded 19 points (7-14 FG, 5-10 3Pt and 1-1 FT), six assists, five rebounds and one block in 30 minutes during Tuesday’s 126-105 win over the Lakers. After exiting early in the first quarter with what appeared to be an arm injury – Dan Woike of The Athletic reports this news – White scored 16 more points before exiting.
In 1966-67, the Syracuse Nationals relocated to Philadelphia as the Philadelphia 76ers, renewing the city rivalry between themselves and the Boston Celtics. While winning their regular-season series against Boston, the Celtics easily outwitted Philadelphia 4-1 and took home the NBA championship that year. Two seasons later, though, Moses Malone joined their ranks from Houston Rockets; defeating Boston four games to one again to claim another championship title!
During the 1978-79 season, Philadelphia achieved a league-best 62-20 record and finished eight games ahead of Boston; however, Boston would go on to claim victory in the 1980 NBA Finals. Andrew Toney led his Sixers side against them during this classic seven-game Eastern Conference Finals series; his ability to take control of games against Boston earned him the moniker “Boston Strangler.”
During this period, the Sixers also made another acquisition from Phoenix Suns: guard Dennis Johnson was added as a defensive force – recording an outstanding 3.2 blocks per game during 1982-83 season and becoming key member in Sixers championship run against Celtics.
Al Horford
The Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics have met twenty times in NBA playoff play since 1977, winning some games between them but losing all series to them since. Most recently they met again during an Eastern Conference Semifinal game which the Celtics took 4-3.
The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers rivalry is among the greatest in NBA history. It began when Syracuse Nationals moved from Syracuse to Philadelphia as a result of becoming the 76ers, reigniting their longstanding feud between Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell that had lain dormant since 1963.
In their inaugural season as Philadelphia team, the Sixers recorded an outstanding 61-21 record to lead their league. Unfortunately they reached the Conference Championship matchup but lost to Boston Celtics who finished with better record than them.
After the 1976-77 season, the Sixers quickly emerged as contenders in the Eastern Conference after selecting Indiana State forward Julius Erving as their draft pick. In 1977-78 they defeated Boston in seven game Eastern semifinals before falling short against Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals.
In 1985’s Finals, Philadelphia once more fell to Boston in five games; but this time around they had Larry Bird to help. As Indiana State star Larry Bird became their first superstar player and helped lead them back from an apparent defeat with an unforgettable Game 5 performance; picking off Andrew Toney with seconds left and scoring with his left hand on fastbreak to preserve victory was instrumental to saving it all.
