There have been several Indian cricketers who began their careers at an extremely early age. Sachin Tendulkar made his debut at 16 years and 205 days. Since then, he has gone on to achieve numerous achievements and set records that still stand today.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a left-handed batsman from Bihar, became the youngest person ever to feature in List A cricket when he made his debut for Bihar at 13 years and 269 days old during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 season – making history at 13 years and 269 days old!
Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh made his international debut at an exceptionally early age – just 17 years and 193 days old when he made his India debut. A great spin bowler who enjoyed competing against Pakistan, Harbhajan went on to play 35 Test matches and take 88 wickets over time.
He is one of the finest spinners India has ever produced and was an integral member of their 2011 World Cup-winning squad, but recent injuries have kept him away from action.
Prithvi Shaw first came into public prominence after scoring 546 runs in a youth tournament. Soon thereafter he made his test debut for India aged 18 years and 319 days, scoring a century on debut and receiving praise for his classy straight and cover drives. Unfortunately injuries and poor form have prevented him from featuring regularly in India’s national team recently.
Chetan Sharma
Chetan Sharma was one of India’s finest medium pace bowlers, winning the Benson and Hedges World Series Cup at 18 and being part of their victorious side that year. His fast bowling revolutionized India’s pace attack.
He became the first Indian ever to take three wickets against Ken Rutherford, Ian Smith and Ewen Chatfield at one World Cup tournament – in 1987’s World Cup tournament! As part of India’s team that defeated England 2-0 during that Test series.
Sharma was trained in Chandigarh by Desh Prem Azad – famously the coach of Kapil Dev and Yograj Singh. At 16, Sharma made his first-class debut for Haryana. With both sides to his game as well as being adept with bouncers irrespective of wicket conditions.
Prithvi Shaw
Prithvi Shaw first gained national notoriety at 14 by scoring 546 runs in an Elite Division Harris Shield match and earning himself record-setting status. His extraordinary batting prowess drew comparisons to that of Sachin Tendulkar and was immediately touted as India’s next big thing.
Shaw has an exciting path ahead of him and should be kept an eye on, as his ability can write new chapters in Indian cricket history.
Shaw was raised from humble origins. Following the loss of his mother when he was four, this left an emotional gap which he filled by hard work and dedication to cricket. Dedicating himself entirely to cricket helped alleviate financial worries for his family when scholarships started coming his way and an MLA from Shiv Sena offered them housing near Shaw’s training centre.
Washington Sundar
Washington Sundar is an exceptional all-rounder who can play both powerplay and middle overs. With an outstanding strike rate and economy rate, he also is an outstanding fielder – playing for Rising Pune Supergiant in IPL 2019.
Tamil Nadu all-rounder Uday Kumar made his first-class debut during Ranji Trophy 2016-17 season and quickly established himself as a key member. With his keen desire to improve and proven all-round abilities, Uday is considered an exciting prospect for India’s future.
India made his ODI and T20I debuts for him in 2017. As an off spin right arm bowler with tremendous potential in white ball cricket, he has already shown remarkable promise domestically and in IPL cricket – becoming a very dangerous opponent to his opposition. Furthermore, his batsmanship is second-to-none. Furthermore, his strong drive toward excellence makes him an exceptional leader within his dressing room team.
Ishant Sharma
India’s cricket fans are passionate about their sport, but young talent really exhilarates them. Youngsters add new skill and hope to the game; often their performances alter its course forever.
Ishant Sharma is one player who has long dominated Indian pitches with his lean physique and high-arm action. Throughout 105 Test matches he amassed 311 wickets; though less successful at taking wickets in One Day International matches. Though his results can fluctuate widely from game to game – Ishant remains a top-quality bowler regardless of this shortcoming.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest cricketer ever to sign an Indian Premier League contract when he earned one at just 13 years old. Hailing from Bihar, the left-handed batter has represented his state in Ranji and Mushtaq Ali trophy tournaments while representing India at under-19 international matches. Rajasthan Royals purchased him at this year’s auction for 11 million rupees.
Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina burst onto the international scene as a teenage prodigy during Greg Chappell’s regime, striking fearlessness into every game with his natural elegance and fearless approach that soon made him one of India’s primary options for One-Day International (ODIs).
As an impact player in T20 cricket, he made several vital innings for India at the highest level and had an immediate impactful presence within Chennai Super Kings’ franchise in IPL.
Raina was known for his close association with MS Dhoni and even captained Chennai Super Kings (CSK) matches on occasion. On 15 August 2020 – just minutes after Dhoni had done so – Raina announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, too. Raina is married to Priyanka Chaudhary and currently resides in Rajnagar in Uttar Pradesh with two children and his three elder brothers Dinesh, Naresh and Mukesh as well as sister Renu.
