Bangladesh Premier League

Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), organized by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, is a franchise-based Twenty20 cricket league established by Dhaka and Chittagong Cricket Boards and held its inaugural season from February 2012 – 2013. All matches take place within both cities.

BPL has had an immense effect on Bangladeshi cricket talent pool, drawing international and domestic cricketers together during tournament play. Comilla Victorians and Rajshahi Kings have become stand-out teams within BPL.

Origins

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket tournament hosted in Bangladesh by the Bangladesh Cricket Board since 2012. Since 2012, it has become the 16th most watched premier league worldwide and provides entertainment as well as national pride and unity through national pride increases and opportunity for local talent showcased through local players to showcase themselves and earn a living wage.

Dhaka Gladiators won their inaugural Bangladesh Premier League season by defeating Chittagong Kings in 2012. This was an unprecedented achievement; being the first time that any team from Dhaka won such an accolade.

Since its debut, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has undergone significant transformations. Its popularity has skyrocketed and millions of fans eagerly watch games at stadiums and on television alike. Furthermore, not only is the BPL an enjoyable form of entertainment but it also promotes soccer at grassroots levels while giving young talents a platform to shine; all this contributes towards furthering soccer in Bangladesh as well as making it more appealing to potential investors.

Rules

Bangladesh Premier League tournament rules resemble those of franchise-run T20 tournaments around the world in many respects: Each team plays each other twice during group stage play before four of them advance to playoffs and face each other once more during Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2, before meeting up again for final.

Comilla Victorians are currently reigning BPL champions, while Durdanto Dhaka, Fortune Barishal, Khulna Titans, Rangpur Riders and Sylhet Strikers are also competing.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has made several modifications to this year’s competition, such as requiring all teams to hire foreign coaches and physiotherapists and having at least one leg-spinner in their squads. Furthermore, new rules were instituted by BCB to encourage local participation; fireworks and balloon releasing ceremonies before opening matches have also been banned as a result of these amendments.

Matches

Bangladesh Premier League will begin on January 20, 2021 and feature six teams competing for its coveted trophy. Matches will take place across three stadiums: Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka, Chittagong’s Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium and Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet. The player draft was held on December 27, 2021 to select players based on batting and bowling performances; four of these will qualify for playoffs while third and fourth placed teams will face off in Eliminator games between these teams with only the winner advancing further towards Qualifier 2.

Comilla Victorians claimed victory in the 2023 BPL season after defeating Sylhet Strikers by seven wickets in the final match, their fourth success overall and most prominent team. Other teams that have made appearances include Rajshahi Royals and Rangpur Riders – each winning twice; Chattogram Challengers and Fortune Barishal have appeared three times as finalists;

Sponsorships

The Bangladesh Premier League features many forms of sponsorship to assist teams. A prominent one comes from Walton Group, one of Bangladesh’s premier electrical and electronics firms. Their sponsorship has lasted several seasons now; their current tournament being branded BBS Cables powered by Walton Bangladesh Premier League T-20 2022 is proof.

Bangladesh Premier League Season 8 ran from January 21 – 18 February 2022 and culminated in a match between Rangpur Riders and Dhaka Dynamites; Rangpur won. Chris Gayle’s two massive centuries paved their path to glory; also becoming one of only three players to have ever scored sixes in an T20 final!

This year’s competition featured seven teams. After an initial stage, four of these advanced to the playoffs for single elimination games and qualifier matches; Qualifier 1 winners would face off against Qualifier 2 winners before playing one more time for a Championship game to determine who would claim victory and become league champions.

Finale

Comilla Victorians faced Fortune Barishal in a thrilling final match of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), held at Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka and won with six wickets against on 157/6 final score; Evin Lewis top scored for Comilla Dynamites with 45 runs.

At Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka, two teams battled it out for the tenth season of Bangladesh Premier League cricket at Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Comilla Victorians was led by Litton Das and defeated Rangpur Riders to book their spot in the summit clash, while Fortune Barishal led by Tamim Iqbal defeated Chattogram Challengers via Eliminator match to also make it.

West Indies star Chris Gayle won both bat and ball awards to take home Player of the Tournament honors. He finished with two incredible centuries and scored an unprecedented 146 sixes during a Bangladesh Premier League Final innings (146*). Victorians remain the most successful side ever to compete in Bangladesh Premier League history with four titles in seven appearances – an unparalleled achievement!
