As India National Cricket Team coaches, India national cricket team coaches have an immense responsibility. Media scrutiny, public expectations, and billion-plus fans must all be carefully managed.
Keki Tarapore to Ravi Shastri have had an enormous impact on Indian cricket’s culture. Kirsten, especially, championed calmness and focus as she led India to victory at the 2011 World Cup; while Wadekar laid down the groundwork for structured player development programs.
Top 6 India National Cricket Team Coaches List
Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir has long been a reliable member of India’s top order. Starting off as opener with Delhi Daredevils alongside Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid, Gambhir eventually established himself as their lead batsman in One Day Internationals between 2007 and 2011, amassing eight hundreds and 27 50+ scores over those years while helping India secure two World Cup victories – an accomplishment which he places greater value than personal statistics.
After retiring in 2018, Gambhir joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and successfully ran for election to the lower house of parliament from 2019-2024, serving as Member of Parliament from 2019 to 2024. However, upon reaching this stage he resigned in order to focus on coaching cricket instead; feeling he wanted to contribute something back into cricket through coaching rather than politics.
As head coach, Gambhir instilled hunger and flawless execution to lead India to their maiden ICC Champions Trophy victory in 2025. Additionally, he supported Shubman Gill as long-term leader across formats, grooming him to lead Test and ODI cricket captaincies in due course.
Kamlesh Jain
India national cricket team coaches are essential to its success. They work tirelessly to keep players healthy and prepared for action while also aiding with mental conditioning of players.
Kamlesh Jain, a long-standing physiotherapist for Kolkata Knight Riders, has become an important influence within their team and was promoted by Indian Cricket Board to serve as Head Physio of their National team.
Jain has left an impressionful first impression with Gautam Gambhir, BCCI secretary Jay Shah and NCA chief VVS Laxman, as he will soon join the team. Expectations are that Jain will bring with him new ideas and perspectives when replacing T. Dilip as fielding coach; Dilip was instrumental under Rahul Dravid but does not feature among Gambhir’s initial list of appointments; Paras Mhambrey and Vikram Rathour will not feature either.
Morkel
Morkel is a masculine name that conjures feelings of strength, resilience and nature connection. Although not widely used as given names, Morkel can make for an excellent option when seeking an unusual but memorable moniker for their children.
Morne Morkel is a South African cricket coach, having previously assisted Pakistan in the ICC World Twenty20 tournament and Lucknow Super Giants of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over his 12-year international career – during which he took 544 wickets – Morkel played 86 Test matches and 117 ODIs, taking 544 wickets overall.
As a person, Morkel exhibits a balance between calm strength and humility, making them a reliable ally who’s always willing to listen and provide advice. Though their strength can sometimes be intimidating, Morkel makes sure not to alienate those they encounter; romantic relationships often showcase passion and depth beneath the surface: cozy afternoons spent playing board games alongside supporting one’s adventurous streak.
T. Dilip Kumar
India men’s national cricket team represents India internationally. Administered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), their success has seen them win several prestigious tournaments such as ICC World Cup and Champions Trophy titles.
Indian cricket’s head coaching positions began to emerge during the late Seventies, initially functioning more as group management than tactical oversight. Over time however, this role has become an increasingly specialized position.
Gautam Gambhir now leads both Test and ODI squads while Morne Morkel oversees fast bowling unit. Their coaching setup combines fresh ideas with proven experience – which is yielding tremendous results on the Indian cricket scene. With these changes at play, India cricket scene is entering an audacious new chapter.
Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri has left an indelible imprint on Indian cricket both as player and coach, becoming widely respected for his insightful analysis and passionate commentary – not to mention successful coaching stints that have produced tangible results.
At Don Bosco High School in Mumbai, he began his playing career under teachers Vasant Amladi and V. S. Marshall Patil’s encouragement, playing hard and practicing regularly to reach the 1976 inter-school Giles Shield final, only to lose to St Mary’s.
Shastri emerged as India’s likely captain at a time when Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev were beginning to slow. A reliable batsman with the ability to bat anywhere between 1-10, Shastri was considered ideal as India’s next captain.
Ajit Wadekar
Wadekar had to learn to overcome pain and rejection on his journey to become one of India’s top athletes, yet be brave enough to seize life-altering opportunities as he progressed. A chance meeting on a bus trip with Baloo Gupte propelled him from casual tennis ball cricketer to India Test captain; later crediting this experience with giving him more confidence which paid dividends when leading India to series victories against West Indies and England in 1971. For his batting, Wadekar is grateful to Joe Kamath who helped work on opening up stance while striking an effective balance between power and finesse.
However, his international career came to a close during a disastrous tour of England in 1974. Out for just 42 at Lord’s, it prompted a funeral atmosphere within India’s changing room – leaving just Wadekar out as its iconoclast in their place – while Gary Kirsten and Ravi Shastri each contributed towards shaping its ethos in their own unique ways.
