India’s title defence at the Under-19 World Cup came to its first real test during a dramatic semifinal with South Africa in Benoni. India were helped along by an outstanding 171-run fifth-wicket partnership between Sachin Dhas and Uday Saharan that propelled them towards their fifth final of five consecutive tournaments.
At first, they dodged short balls without much difficulty; however, two quick wickets from Kwena Maphaka and Tristan Luus put their opponents under considerable strain.
India: Uday Saharan (c)
India was guided through an unstable patch by Saharan’s composed innings of 81 to reach the Under-19 World Cup final for an unprecedented ninth time at Willowmoore Park. Together with Sachin Dhas, Saharan stitched a 171-run partnership that kept their opponents at bay when India were 32/4 in their chase of 245 runs.
Riley Norton bowled his 44th over, and Murugan Abhishek was run out for running carelessly; Oliver Whitehead caught him attempting to take a quick single but was caught out. This brings the Indian score down to 217/6 after 45 overs, needing 19 runs off 18 balls.
Arshin Kulkarni (wk)
Kulkarni may have come as an unexpected pick to this tournament, but his performance in his inaugural match has quickly earned him wide acclaim. A versatile batsman who also bowls medium pace bowling, Kulkarni has become a surprise star for Maharashtra this season.
Left-handed opener Vikas Jain played an integral part in his team’s win against Bengal earlier this month, scoring 20 off seven balls and then taking two wickets off 22 overs for four overs.
Kulkarni hails from Solapur and will join millions of Indians in hoping he and his teammates go all the way in the World Cup.
Rudra Mayur Patel
Since reaching the semifinals at the ACC U-19 Asia Cup, Indian youngster have been training hard for this summer’s World Cup tournament in Brazil. Group A includes Bangladesh, Ireland and USA – an impressive lineup!
Spinner Kwena Maphaka made waves with a five-wicket haul in their preparation tri-series against Afghanistan, and should be one to watch out for. He will be supported by wicketkeeper Kwena Maphaka who plays an essential part in fielding duties while also being an important batsman himself.
Steve Stolk is another player to keep an eye out for as he demonstrated during his 2023 Minor League season with Morrisville Raptors that he can quickly score runs when needed.
Sachin Dhas
Sachin Dhas was India’s stand-out performer in their dramatic two-wicket victory against South Africa at Benoni on Tuesday in the Under-19 World Cup semifinal. Pairing up with skipper Uday Saharan, Sachin’s unbreakable 171-run fifth wicket partnership helped India avoid an early top-order collapse and propel them towards victory.
Dhas’ 96-run knock propelled his team to 245 with seven balls remaining. Hailing from Beed, home of legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Dhas struck 11 fours and one six during his match-winning innings; Ravichandran Ashwin even noted his similarity in style to West Indies star Shai Hope!
Priyanshu Moliya
India are bidding for their fifth Under-19 World Cup crown and currently lead the standings after dominating their opening match against Bangladesh, but their campaign has been marred by an outbreak of coronavirus cases.
Cricket South Africa has stripped David Teeger of his U-19 captaincy following his comments supporting Israeli soldiers. However, he will still play for his team.
India has had numerous marquee players participate in the Under-19 World Cup over time, such as Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag and Rohit Sharma. Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal also made appearances.
Musheer Khan
Musheer Khan has made waves since joining Sarfaraz Khan’s national team a year ago. At 18-years-old, Musheer is excelling for India at the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup 2024 held in South Africa.
He leads the tournament’s run-scorers and boasts two centuries. Additionally, he has excelled with the ball by picking up seven wickets at an economy rate of 3.63.
Mumbai youngster Amir Sarfaraz has drawn inspiration from Sarfaraz when it comes to his approach to cricket. His performances in Cooch Behar Trophy saw him being selected into Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team in December.
Aravelly Avanish Rao
After Sri Lanka was barred by the International Cricket Council (ICC), this tournament, now taking place in South Africa, will give young players a platform to excel. India can count on Arshin Kulkarni, wicketkeeper-batsman Avanish Rao, left-arm spinner Saumy Kumar Pandey and pacer Raj Limbani being among their roster and be sure that they have sufficient depth in their squad to go all the way in this competition.
Pothugal village resident Jahvendra Rane from Rajanna Sircilla district’s Mustabad mandal already made headlines when he earned selection to India Under-19 squad for tri-series and 2024 Men’s Under-19 World Cup tournaments as well as being acquired by CSK at auction for Rs 20 lakh base price.
Naman Tiwari
India was victorious in their fifth Under-19 World Cup tournament and made history when they became the first team ever to sweep all their matches in one tournament. Corbin Bosch, son of late South African cricketer Tertius Bosch was named man-of-the-match during the final.
Yash Dhull will look to join Mohammad Kaif, Virat Kohli, Unmukt Chand and Prithvi Shaw on the list of Indian U-19 World Cup-winning captains this year. Dhull made two hundreds in his Ranji Trophy debut and was later picked up by Delhi Capitals at IPL auction.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi stood out in India’s team. In one Youth Test against Australia, he scored an unbeaten century off 58 balls – the second fastest century ever scored by any Youth Test player!
Soumya Pandye
Saumya Pandey, an outstanding left-arm spinner from India, has emerged as one of the leading wicket-takers at this year’s Under-19 World Cup in South Africa. He credits Aril Anthony as his source for success.
“He stands out with his varied bowling style, which makes him standout,” explained his coach. “He uses the crease effectively. And, thanks to hard work, he has achieved success.”
The MPCA extends our sincerest congratulations to Saumya on his outstanding performance. Naman Tiwari from Lucknow and Raj Limbani of Gujarat have also played outstandingly for India, taking three and two wickets respectively against Australia in their recent match.
