Cricket in Ireland

Cricket has made great strides in Ireland over recent years, with the national team competing in high-profile matches against major cricketing nations, while its popularity continues to spread in Ireland.

But social and governance changes were taking a toll. The Land War resulted in the division of estates belonging to gentry families, leading them to lose their cricket pitches.

Overview

Cricket has a rich and long tradition in Ireland and remains one of the country’s most beloved sports. Today, Ireland has one of the premier associate teams worldwide and has participated in five ICC Women’s World Cup tournaments.

Ireland men’s national cricket team currently ranks 12th globally in ODI matches. Awarded full member status by the International Cricket Council on 22 June 2017, Ireland has since won their inaugural Test match.

Leinster, Munster, Northern Ireland and Connacht each host their own league and cup competitions for both senior and junior levels, in addition to domestic competitions which take place domestically every year. Ireland also participates actively in T20 Global Leagues tournaments worldwide.

History

Ireland was previously incapable of hosting regular one-day internationals; however, thanks to steady progress and some notable results the ICC granted Ireland full membership and since 2017 Ireland have hosted three tests.

Cricket first flourished in Ireland during the 18th century but lost some traction as other Gaelic sports such as hurling became more popular. Only in 1980 did Ireland make any real attempt at becoming an established cricketing nation, entering its inaugural Gillette Cup competition.

Alec O’Riordan was one of Ireland’s greatest all-rounders during that era, captaining every level from under-12s up to senior level and earning 30 caps as a senior. A true lover of cricket who gave everything for Ireland but unfortunately died due to Covid pandemic in February 2019, his death prompting waves of grief among his many friends and followers around Ireland and globally.

Team Players

Ireland men’s cricket team represents its people internationally in international cricket. Governed by the Irish Cricket Union (ICU) out of Dublin, and with multiple home grounds including Malahide, Clontarf and Stormont located around Belfast – the team is administered by this non-profit organisation which invests its surplus back into developing Irish cricket.

The Australian team is well known for its ability to surprise big names in world cricket. Since the launch of T20 World Cup tournaments in 2009, they have attended every edition. At 2024 tournament, Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie will lead them as anchor players while younger players such as Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, and George Dockrell round off a highly talented squad.

Irish hopes of making history at the 2024 T20 World Cup are high, as they will compete in Group A alongside India, Pakistan and co-hosts USA and Canada.

Best Wins

Ireland’s stunning win against Afghanistan was a momentous turning point in their nation and cricketers’ history. Ireland have long been seen as the underdogs of World Cup matches, providing welcome shocks against such heavyweights as India and Pakistan with stunning upset victories like this.

Irish batsmen proved they weren’t out of their depth either as they rallied from an inauspicious start to score an impressive 182-run total in just 20 overs, thanks to Andrew Balbirnie’s unbeaten unbeaten 58 and support from Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker ensuring history was made.

Ireland made history when they won their inaugural Test match and will long remember this momentous achievement. Although it took eight attempts for them to secure victory, Ireland have finally gained entry into full member status and will add further momentum towards full membership of cricket’s top nations.

Hihglights

Ireland has seen cricket become an ever-increasingly popular pastime, boasting one of the highest rates of participation among Associate Member countries. Organized by the Irish Cricket Union – known as Cricket Ireland – under which is housed Ireland’s national team as well.

Ireland was facing an uphill struggle after losing both openers early. But George Dockrell and Curtis Campher rallied the batsmen with an astounding 119-run partnership which Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie hailed. Andy said it was truly impressive and feels happy they got over the finish line together.

Ireland attracted more international players after receiving ODI status; however, due to limited professional wages many talented players left for England where regular salaries could be paid out. Since becoming full members, however, Ireland has managed to retain most of its top players.

Final words

Stella Downes was unanimously confirmed as President of Cricket Ireland at its annual general meeting, while three new Directors were approved by Members at this same gathering. At this same event, former ICC chief executive Dave Richardson was also recommended for membership on its board of Directors.

Test cricket will likely remain popular only among financially stable nations such as India with multibillion-dollar domestic broadcast deals; however, Irish administrators believe they have an opportunity to resist this trend and keep the five-day format alive.

However, 50-over cricket has always been at the heart of Ireland’s prominence both domestically and abroad. The tumultuous qualifiers against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in 2022 remain vivid memories among sporting fans, and this summer will mark Ireland’s inaugural ever Test match in Belfast – with Communities Minister Deidre Hargey promising a letter congratulating their achievement almost two years after Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty requested this.
