Harmanpreet Kaur (c)
Harmanpreet Kaur led Mumbai Indians with poise in the end, leading them to an exciting win against Delhi Capitals at Brabourne Stadium. Harmanpreet commended her bowlers’ efforts in restricting Delhi Capitals to 164/6 while acknowledging Shabnim Ismail, Saika Ishaque, and Natalie Sciver-Brunt’s contributions as captain.
Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt combined for a fifty-run partnership that gave Mumbai some momentum after an initially slow start. While Kaur was aggressive, Sciver-Brunt maintained stability. Sciver-Brunt hit Annabel Sutherland for four over extra cover on the third ball of her 10th over, before smashing two consecutive balls over deep backward square leg and short midwicket to reach fifty in style.
At 161, Mumbai were regularly losing wickets at regular intervals against Jess Jonassen (3-25) and Minnu Mani (3-17), who threw everything at MI at times of trouble. But experienced batswoman Yastika Bhatia and debutante Niki Prasad worked hard in the middle overs to keep MI alive, including smashing two runs off one misfield from Harmanpreet Kaur giving Niki her final over to bat; Niki hit four fours out of it but took two more runs through misfielding on two misfielding off second ball after she struck her four off one ball!
Nat Sciver-Brunt (wk)
Nat Sciver-Brunt made her mark in Women’s Premier League history during a brief stay at the crease. The England all-rounder scored two sixes and four fours in her 30-ball innings, forming an invaluable 89-run partnership with Harmanpreet Kaur.
Lanning won the toss and elected to bat first. She suffered early setbacks by losing both Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia cheaply; however, Jemimah Rodrigues helped the hosts recover by scoring 28 runs off 21 balls for her team.
Delhi found themselves struggling in their chase of the target, and Kapp bowled an outstanding opening spell, taking an important wicket against Matthews with her deft delivery that dislodged him backward of her crease. Additionally, Amelia Kerr and Sajeevan Sajana were dismissed quickly before Jess Jonassen picked up two quick wickets to restore control for Delhi.
Marizanne Kapp (wk)
Marizanne Kapp was Delhi Capitals’ savior with the ball during a dramatic Women’s Premier League (WPL) final at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, bowling two crucial overs to remove both openers in just three overs and put them out of reach of Mumbai Indians’ comeback efforts. Amelia Kerr provided invaluable assistance by taking down key MI batsman Jess Jonassen to seal victory for Delhi Capitals.
Kapp let a couple of runs through in the powerplay before returning to take another key scalp – Mandhana tried to loft her bat over fielders but was caught short of the boundary by Kapp’s slower delivery on good length angled towards Mandhana and took an early wicket off Kapp.
Niki Prasad (wk)
After an initially slow start, Harmanpreet Kaur quickly increased her scoring rate in an 89-run partnership with Nat Sciver-Brunt that yielded 53/2 in 8.5 overs; their departure triggered a mini-collapse for MI as Amelia Kerr (2 off 3 runs and Sajeevan Sajana were run-out while Jemimah Rodrigues and Annabel Sutherland both fell shortly thereafter to leave them reeling on 76/4 by 14th over.
Niki Prasad came through for Delhi with her 35 off 33 cameo innings to help keep their deficit to a minimum; nearly leading them towards victory before falling short at the last ball.
Karnataka all-rounder Kanak Devi is a regular member of India U19 team and has proven her ability to compete against even the top players on her day. She has been performing exceptionally this domestic season and her performance against Mumbai will only raise more hype surrounding her arrival at top level cricket. A prodigious talent, Devi has established herself as an entertainer since her 2024 Under-19 World Cup heroics cemented her place as one of Karnataka’s finest talent – further cementing herself into folklore!
Shabnim Ismail (wk)
Delhi Capitals elected to bat first after winning the toss and Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma both fell early, including Verma who fell to Ismail lbw for her maiden WPL match. Jemimah Rodrigues then led MI with an outstanding 28-ball 30 to lead them home.
But their run chase stalled, and in the end MI fell short by eight runs. Amelia Kerr and Nat Sciver-Brunt both bowled exceptionally throughout their respective spells.
4.3: FOUR! Shafali was hit a full, full-swing pitch aimed at her bat and hit it over mid-on for an epic four.
