New Zealand and South Africa will face off in Pune for an important ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 clash, where South Africa currently lies second while New Zealand is one spot behind.
Trent Boult is bowling extremely well for New Zealand, consistently placing his delivery at Yorker length and keeping batsmen honest with his movement.
South Africa Performance
After West Indies and England each won their home series with convincing margins, test cricket seemed set to become the pinnacle of cricket once more. But at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday New Zealand will face an uncertain Proteas team, possibly serving as a shadow team against South Africa.
Trent Boult began the bowling for New Zealand while Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma led off South Africa’s opening pair with an outstanding partnership and provided them with an ideal start.
South African batsmen used the powerplay period to accelerate their innings and score quickly. Rassie van der Dussen scored his fourth century of the tournament and looked in great form.
However, there were a few other highlights. The Proteas have had difficulty with chasing this year and hope to turn things around against Kane Williamson’s side. Furthermore, they lost two tests recently which could put them behind Australia in terms of rankings; New Zealand captain Dane Willis believes they can turn around quickly though.
New Zealand Performance
New Zealand bowlers struggled today, allowing South Africa to post an impressive total. Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen shared an outstanding 200-run partnership for the second wicket to set South Africa up nicely.
At an early stage in their first innings, the Kiwis lost captain Neil Brand when Tom Blundell caught him off Matt Henry for 25. However, they managed to recover from this early setback and make progress against England.
New Zealand have an excellent chance of victory in this match; their squad boasts several experienced players but has yet to demonstrate they can compete on an international stage in test cricket.
Even with heavy rain falling on it, the pitch remains conducive for cricket despite all the extra damp. It’s slow and sticky with just the right amount of spin for New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Will Young to bat on. Lungi Ngidi bowled an maiden over to start them off.
Match Scorecard
South Africa quickly took control with their bat, as Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen scored hundreds within minutes of each other to establish an early lead with ease against New Zealand bowlers. Their partnership of 200 runs proved decisive against Kiwi bowling orders.
New Zealand struggled to counter South African bowlers. Batsmen from New Zealand found it difficult to score freely and they eventually all out for 167 in 35.3 overs, all under Gerald Coetzee and Kagiso Rabada’s bowling attack.
James Neesham was the only batsman from New Zealand capable of posting an adequate score against South African bowlers, but was ultimately clean bowled by Keshav Maharaj who struck with an accurate delivery to strike Neesham out at his back stumps with devastating effect.
Match Highlights
South Africa made a determined effort to recover from their slow start, led by David Bedingham (87 from 96 balls) and Zubayr Hamza who made crucial contributions. Unfortunately, wickets fell regularly after lunch and tea breaks leading to an eventual collapse leaving South Africa struggling.
Black Caps were always playing behind the rate and, despite Roston Chase’s late breakthrough, could not put enough pressure on South African innings. Thanks to an outstanding start from Andre Russell in the final over, however, they eventually came close enough to secure victory, closing on 80-4 with him hitting six off first ball of last over to achieve victory!
Tanzim Hasan bowled an outstanding four-over spell, conceding only 10 runs from his first three and quickly picking up Reeza Hendricks, Quinton de Kock, and Tristan Stubbs’s wickets in quick succession. Additionally, he bowled 12 dot balls during this four-over spell – an impressive performance in its own right! He’ll hope to build upon this impressive tournament record when taking to the field against Afghanistan again later today.
Final words
South Africa are finally on the cusp of glory after years of late tournament knockouts, led by Rob Walter, an unconventional coach averaging under 40 in first-class cricket who often exhibits emotional outbursts during matches. After suffering late tournament eliminations for so long, their time to shine in their inaugural World Cup final appears imminent.
The Proteas face mounting pressure to shake their “choker tag”, given to them for their tendency to lose focus at major tournaments and collapse under pressure.
CSA has come under scrutiny for selecting an understrength team for next month’s two-test tour of New Zealand. Many of their leading players will miss due to upcoming domestic Twenty20 competition clashing with Test series; this has angered former Australian captain Steve Waugh as well as other critics; yet they have pledged that such decisions won’t repeat themselves; should this claim fail, it could spell serious trouble for Test cricket itself.
