Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have created some of the most captivating cricket rivalries over time, from jaw-dropping Test matches to thrilling ODI encounters.

Sri Lanka couldn’t match Bangladesh’s total of 714 in Dambulla, even with Pathum Nissanka scoring his career-best 187 and fifties from Dinesh Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis. Litton Das produced an outstanding effort which saw Bangladesh claim victory by 83 runs.

Sri Lanka won their three-match series against Bangladesh by 77 runs at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Pathum Nissanka shone with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 187 and sharing a century stand with Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis.

As Sri Lanka began their second innings, they faced an enormous task but ultimately managed to pull it off with ease and secure an innings victory with over 24 hours left in play. Their bowlers, led by debutant Tanvir Islam and Mahedi Hasan Miraz in particular, played superbly to restrict visitors’ total to 167 all out on an uneven wicket that provided some variation.

At the heart of it all was veteran Charith Asalanka’s outstanding last-wicket performance that propelled his side towards victory. For his impressive batting and bowling efforts he was awarded Man of the Match honors.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have played in 272 Test matches, with Sri Lanka winning 86 while losing 85 and four going unresolved. Both sides also competed in 108 T20I matches with Sri Lanka winning 54 of them while losing 52 (with one tie occurring) or being tied. Finally, both teams participated in three ICC Trophy tournaments – all won by Sri Lanka while none won by Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka Cricket Team represents Sri Lanka internationally in men’s international cricket matches. Tanzid Hasan Tamim then hit an unbeaten 73 to help seal an innings victory and three victories overall in this series 3-0. Mahedi Hasan from Bangladesh earned Player of the Match honors; his bowlers utilized variable bounce to their advantage during play.

Match Highlights

Colombo pitch was not particularly helpful to Bangladesh bowlers on Day 2, as Sri Lanka put up an aggressive attack. Lahiru Udara came within one run of scoring a half century while Pathum Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal kept Bangladesh innings progressing forward.

At stumps on day two, India reached 247 for eight. Debutant Sonal Dinusha made her mark by scoring an unbeaten unbroken 194-run stand with Chandimal; Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan provided breakthroughs for their opponents through spinners Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan respectively.

Nuwan Thushara delivered a slower delivery which slipped through to fine leg for four. Dinesh Chandimal also played a deliberate reverse sweep against fuller length delivery but could only manage an edge that flew to vacant slip region – his century would remain just short! Mehidy Hasan Miraz swiftly took two wickets before ending day two at 324 for six and leaving visitors struggling at the bottom.

Result

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bangladesh found themselves struggling in their reply despite Shadman Islam’s patient 46; wickets kept falling thanks to Sri Lanka’s pace attack led by Vishwa Fernando and debutant Sonal Dinusha. Rain caused several interruptions but eventually home side managed to seize control.

At the first drinks break, Bangladesh were well on their way to reaching 495, but things quickly unravelled after that break. Milan Rathnayake’s brilliant piece of fielding to run out Najmul Hossain Shanto for 23 helped turn the tide, while Asitha Fernando then took three wickets within two overs – including Mehidy Hasan Miraz who had previously been spared.

Charith Asalanka’s century and Sonal, Asitha and Vishwa’s impressive bowling enabled Charith Asalanka and his hosts to comfortably win this match and take an early 1-0 lead in the series. Captain Dhananjaya de Silva shared his views after this victory: He was pleased that his team rose to meet difficult conditions head-on; particularly pleased by Sonal’s debut performance as she helped lead their attack with precision.
