The Best Finisher in Cricket

The Best Finisher in Cricket

Cricket is a game filled with intense moments and nail-biting finishes, and finishers play an invaluable role in turning around matches through their exceptional skills and turning crunch situations into opportunities.

Cricket’s top finishers of all time. Here is our selection of the ten greatest finishers of all time.

Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell has emerged as one of the premier finishers in white ball cricket. A stand-out performer for Australia in both ODIs and T20Is, Glenn excels at finishing overs with skill. Known as an exceptional finisher in cricket’s final stages.

Maxwell grew up in an ordinary suburban backyard, with an Australian father and an intensely competitive older brother who bowled at him relentlessly during Shield games and at local parks. As an avid cricket fan he witnessed that required run rates were increasing across ODIs and Tests and thought unconventional shots may help batsmen score runs more rapidly.

As soon as he had an opportunity to represent the Stars in a Brisbane T20I, he asked Newbery for left-handed thigh pads and batting gloves to increase his batting repertoire and practice using both hands simultaneously – something which still comes naturally today! On a warm Brisbane evening in December 2014 – when Stars needed 165 from 10 overs to defeat Brisbane Heat – he stood at the Gabba.

Jos Buttler

As a 12-year-old, Jos Buttler displayed such natural leadership that his Somerset Academy coach Dennis Breakwell quickly predicted he would captain England at some level – even placing a wager with a bookmaker (but ultimately failing to cash it in).

Buttler stands out as an outstanding finisher in cricket due to his dedication, reliability, and calm nature when facing critical moments for his team. With just a flick of his wrist he can transform tight situations into easy victories or shift strike as needed.

Buttler may not possess the most potency as a batsman, but his calm approach and advanced technique makes him difficult for bowlers to score against. This was most evident during his 141-ball innings against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston; it was the fourth fastest century ever scored and helped England come back from near certain defeat.

Buttler made headlines around the world after he mankaded Angelo Mathews during an ODI against Sri Lanka in 2014. That act cemented Buttler’s standing as one of cricket’s greatest villains and cemented his reputation as a world-class cricketer.

AB de Villiers

AB de Villiers was one of the greatest batsmen of his era and an unparalleled finisher. After making an early entry into Test cricket at just 20 years old in 2004, his formidable batting prowess made him a key component of South African team batting lineups. A gritty accumulator with multiple strokes on both sides of the wicket, de Villiers excelled under pressure situations and in all conditions.

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers was an extraordinary wicket-keeper, taking 11 catches in one Test match alone! As a batsman he could adapt across all three formats of cricket – but does that make him better than MS Dhoni as the best finisher in cricket? No; MS is unquestionably one of modern cricket’s great legends who has led India to several successful chases in ODI cricket matches. AB recently put this debate to bed by posting his comments on YouTube addressing it from his own channel below – you can watch it here!

Viv Richards

Viv Richards was one of the world’s greatest cricketing batsmen, known for his explosive batting style that helped West Indies win many Test and ODI matches during his career. He scored 8,540 runs over 124 Test matches and 6,721 over 187 ODI games during this time, often turning losing games into victory with his aggressive bating style.

“Swagger” is an apt description of Viv Richards’ batting style and persona; when he took to the pitch to bat, crowds would gasp in shock while bowlers felt intimidated by him.

Ian Botham, Sachin Tendulkar and Martin Crowe all considered Richards the finest batsman ever seen in cricket history. Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne also revered Richards highly as did Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne; many refer to Richards as the most complete batsman ever due to his dominance both Test and ODI formats.

Kieron Pollard

Kieron Pollard is an accomplished batsman who can quickly turn around any bowling line-up. A key member of Mumbai Indians and West Indies national teams, Pollard can clear boundaries effortlessly from his lower middle order batting position.

Pollard is a tall and rugged batter who can smash the ball to all parts of the ground with ease. He is widely considered one of the premier finishers in white-ball cricket and boasts an exceptional domestic record, while also being quite economical at times and being an electrifying fielder in limited-overs cricket.

He is a rare specimen in modern batting who epitomises power hitting. Even on mishits he can launch long sixes. Known for scoring crucial runs during death overs and as such has been key in Mumbai Indians T20 League success; moreover he has been an invaluable member of West Indies team, winning many matches that they otherwise would have lost otherwise.
