Afghanistan has made tremendous strides over the last several years in international cricket, making their nation proud while showing that they are an opponent worthy of respect.
AM Ghazanfar delivers his bowls full and around off, Shoriful Islam attempts to go for big but misses and is caught behind; Ghazanfar goes on to capture 6-wicket haul for himself and complete the innings.
ODIs
In one-day internationals (ODIs), teams bat for one innings that typically lasts 55-60 overs. If any side wins by at least 10 wickets, they win the match; batsmen may be dismissed via bowling, catching, leg before wicket dismissals or hitting wicket.
Afghanistan were able to produce an impressive performance with their bat in Sharjah during their opening ODI as they reached 236/7 with Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar combining for an opening partnership of 91 off 109 deliveries, which led to Soumya Sarkar scoring his half century off 110 deliveries. Unfortunately for visitors UAE however their top three batsmen were all dismissed in powerplay before Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi took charge and ensured victory was achieved.
Afghanistan continued their impressive T20 World Cup showing by dominating South Africa 3-0 and Bangladesh 2-1 over two ODI series between June and September, moving them up into the top-six ODI rankings and positioning them to push for Champions Trophy qualification next year.
Afghanistan cricket’s victory against Australia marked a monumental feat, providing hope to their people that Afghanistan can compete with cricketing powerhouses around the globe. Nabi scored an excellent match-winning 84 off 79 to lead his side to success and seal an important win against Australia.
T20s
Afghanistan first made their ODI and T20 debuts several years ago and they quickly proved themselves worthy opponents for teams such as Ireland and Zimbabwe, before finally becoming an impressive force within the game.
Afghanistan eventually found success against higher ranked teams such as India. They experienced one of their greatest victories at the Asia Cup 2018, where India elected to bat first and scored 252 runs with K. L. Rahul scoring an outstanding century before Afghanistan bowled them out for 150.
Afghan cricketers scored another major triumph when they beat Scotland by 125 runs in an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 match held in Sharjah. This marked both their biggest win against a lower-ranked team as well as first win at this tournament by more than 100 runs margin. Other than Afghanistan’s win there are multiple big wins in the cricket World Cup.
Afghanistan recently achieved greatness by reaching the semifinals for the first time ever at the T20 World Cup, earning praise from their native fans after defeating Bangladesh to qualify. Many thousands took to Kabul streets in celebration of this incredible success; ultimately they will go head to head with South Africa for glory!
Tests
Afghanistan has recently achieved the 10th-ranked Test team worldwide, providing hope and resilience to its people who have endured decades of war and terrorist attacks. Cricket is helping unify a country riven by conflict; increasing interest among Afghan youth as well as winning support from its government through investments into it.
In June 2017, Australia played five ODIs and three T20s against Bangladesh before going up against one of their top-8 ranked full members: West Indies in July 2017.
Afghanistan made history when they played an entire series against one of its full members; winning all ODIs 3-0 but losing T20Is 2-1. Mushfiqur Rahim suffered another finger injury which forced him out of both matches against India.
Hashmatullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi led Afghanistan through an early batting slump to reach a competitive total. Afghanistan’s spinners then took control, with AM Ghazanfar grabbing six wickets and Rashid Khan adding another. These bowlers created pressure that Bangladesh couldn’t overcome as their batsmen failed to keep pace.
ICC World Cup
Afghanistan made their World Cup debut at the 2006 tournament and competed in three matches, beating Scotland and Ireland while losing to Australia and South Africa. Though largely considered unknown at that time, Afghanistan showed great improvement under former Pakistan coach Lalchand Rajput who also served as its head coach – making history at ICC with this inaugural appointment of an Associate nation as coach!
Afghanistan beat Bangladesh and India in their group stage to advance to the Super 8 phase of the tournament, then stunned everyone when Afghanistan beat England, Afghanistan won by 69 runs and reigning champion England in their quarter-final match with what many described as an impressive seam and spin bowling performance – one hailed by commentators as an “seam and spin bowling masterclass”. Afghanistan’s success has been nothing short of astounding – from starting as refugees training amid bomb blasts until now producing some of the finest spinners in cricket today.
A batsman is out when either the wicket-keeper throws the ball to a fielder at point of delivery or his teammates run him out. A bowler receives credit if their bowling strikes dismisses someone through bowling, caught, leg before wicket or stumped – or when run out by obstruction to field play or handling ball twice; 100 runs must be scored by either team in order to win their respective match.
