Matches between Ireland cricket team and India national cricket team provide many nail-biting moments and breathtaking displays of skill. From thrilling chases to unbelievable bowling spells, these games never cease to leave audiences breathless!
After each game, reactions from players and coaches provide invaluable insights into what transpired on the field. In this section we’ll take a look back at post-match reactions as well as utilize insight from scorecard analysis to examine what went right (or wrong!) with both teams’ performances.
The History
India and Ireland’s previous meetings in T20 cricket has been decidedly one-sided, with India dominating every meeting they’ve played to date. Rohit Sharma will aim to maintain this trend when taking on their Irish opponents at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York in their season opener matchup.
Ireland have come a long way since their inaugural World Cup appearance in 2009. At that time, they were Associate members of the ICC; however, they first came into global awareness through some impressive results at the 2007 tournament, including an unlikely win against England. Since then they have gained full ODI status and played 197 ODIs to date, compiling an impressive record of 78 wins, 101 defeats and 15 no results.
Irish top order lacks depth, meaning a star performance from one player may be required in order for them to overcome Indian bowlers. Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie could play an instrumental role for Ireland while youngsters such as Joshua Little and Mark Adair will likely also prove valuable; Curtis Campher and George Dockrell’s bowling assistance may prove vital as well; the pitch at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium should prove slow and difficult much like its surface used during Bangladesh-Sri Lanka match-up earlier in this tournament opener between Bangladesh-Sri Lanka match-up was played on similar slow-and-difficult surface used earlier between Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka on December 7th 2018.
The Pitch
Rohit Sharma will lead India against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium for their opening match. These two sides have met three times previously in this short format; all won by India. Rohit’s Indian squad boasts a powerful core with experience accumulated across ODIs, tests, and T20Is – qualities which set it apart as one of the premier sides in world cricket.
But will Ireland put up a fight? In just a few moments we will discover this for ourselves.
Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie will open up for Ireland, while left-arm spinner Arshdeep Singh has the new ball. The pitch is quite slow with plenty of movement for bowlers to exploit.
India’s batsmen will also be put through rigorous scrutiny on Sunday. While the pitch allows them to score decent totals, there will also be plenty of spitting deliveries that make runs hard to come by against a quality opponent like Ireland.
Kohli attempts a drive off-side but only gets an outside edge that goes directly into deep third man’s hands – another dot ball.
The Scorecard
India got off to an emphatic start at the ICC T20 World Cup by easily dispatching Ireland by eight wickets at Nassau County International Stadium in New York. Indian bowlers’ impressive work behind the stumps left no room for Irish batsmen to slip up – thus giving India an early advantage in this year’s tournament.
New York was home to an underperforming pitch, as batsmen found it hard to establish any kind of rhythm against Indian bowlers who took advantage of dew lingering in the ground to aid their bowlers.
Gareth Delany and Josh Little showed immense courage by posting a last-wicket stand of 36 runs off 14 balls when Ireland were bowled out for just 96 in 16 overs thanks to a magnificent bowling performance from Hardik Pandya who took three wickets and was named Player-of-the-Match, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh also contributed with two scalps each.
The Final Overs for Ireland Cricket Team Vs India National Cricket Team Timeline
India won the toss and elected to bowl first. Irish batsmen struggled to capitalize on the pitch and lost wickets regularly as India went on to record an eight-wicket win.
Ireland boasts a talented collection of T20 players such as Josh Little, Harry Tector and Andy Balbirnie; however, they were no match for India’s formidable attack led by Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.
Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah used his pace and aggression to eventually overcome Ireland. Tector took some hard knocks during his innings before finally succumbing to one of Bumrah’s snorters that reared up, brushing against his glove before hitting him in the helmet and sending him packing.
Paul Stirling was also bowled out by an identical delivery which reared back and struck him square in the throat. Other Irish batsmen attempted to fight back but it was all in vain; Ireland eventually succumbed to an embarrassing defeat and were not given an opportunity to play their usual brand of cricket which has usually seen them fare well in games against other teams. They are certainly formidable forces and their performance against Canada will test them further as future matches await them both sides will want an opportunity to improve and win more matches in future!
