Match Scorecard
Pakistan’s top order collapsed at MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai as South Africa pulled off an unexpected win at MA Chidambaram stadium. South Africa took control of the game after Aiden Markram played an impressive innings to put them ahead in their group with four points.
Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock started South Africa off well, hitting two boundaries each in their opening overs. Unfortunately, Pakistan’s bowlers soon responded well and put Pakistan on the back foot.
Afridi was reinstated into the attack for the Proteas’ second over and was costly, giving away 11 runs. While chasing 271 and losing de Kock shortly thereafter, Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen kept hitting boundaries to maintain run-rate, with Aiden Markram making up ground quickly by hitting fours at intervals throughout his innings; eventually reaching their target within 40 overs – their first World Cup victory over Pakistan since 2009.
How many cups has Pakistan won in cricket?
Pakistan has won multiple prestigious cricket titles in their history. Notable victories include winning two Cricket World Cup tournaments – 1992 and 1999 respectively – while finishing as runners-up both times, as well as several ICC Champions Trophy titles. Pakistan have produced top players over time such as fast bowlers Fazal Mahmood and Sarfraz Nawaz and batsmen Hanif Mohammad, among many others.
Current Test rankings place them second; however, they have struggled to hold onto that spot. Through 29 series played thus far, 15 have been won while 9 lost with five draws occurring along the way.
Pakistan remains one of the top teams in One Day Internationals (ODIs). They have won 14 series against only seven losses; Hasan Ali’s performance during 2015 World Cup against India earned him worldwide recognition as an effective fast bowler.
Timelines
South Africa defeated Pakistan by one wicket in an exhilarating World Cup encounter at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, ending their 24-year jinx against their arch-rivals and moving closer towards semi-final qualification. Aiden Markram made an outstanding half-century as South Africans amassed 270 runs total.
Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bat first, with Saud Shakeel (52) and Babar Azam (51) joining forces for an 84-run stand to help lead his side to 270 runs in total.
But their batting struggled throughout, losing five wickets quickly to be all out for 272. That meant Proteas captain Temba Bavuma needed only 63 runs from 95 balls to secure victory in a thrilling finish.
Who wins the most?
South Africa claimed their fourth win of the tournament by defeating Pakistan at Chennai in match 26. Aiden Markram led his Proteas to an exciting one-wicket win against their counterparts with an important knock of 91; Babar Azam made half century but was dismissed by Gerald Coetzee during their chase for 271 victory.
Pakistan have not won against South Africa in a World Cup match since 1994-95; they came close to making history before Markram was dismissed by Jacques Snyman in the 41st over.
South Africa beat Pakistan for the first time since 1993-94’s Super Eight stage matchup, marking their victory as a home win against them at this World Cup tournament. South Africa will next travel to New Zealand and Australia in December for three Twenty20 Internationals and two One Day Internationals respectively.
History
Pakistan boasts a long and distinguished cricketing legacy. They were one of the first teams granted Test-playing status by the International Cricket Council and boast legendary players like AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis, and Dale Steyn. Unfortunately for Pakistan though, their lack of success at winning ICC tournaments has earned them the reputation as chokers.
At the 2007 World Cup, they suffered their most humiliating defeat at the hands of New Zealand, when they suffered an incredible semifinal defeat that sent shockwaves through cricket and was the worst loss ever suffered during this competition.
Pakistan will tour South Africa for three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), two ODIs, and one Test match in 2024. The ODIs will take place in Durban, Centurion, Johannesburg and Cape Town/Johannesburg while Cape Town/Johannesburg and Johannesburg will host Test matches respectively. In their most recent meeting between these teams Pakistan won 4-1 ODI series victory.

Final words
South Africa has successfully shrugged off their “chokers” label by reaching the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Aiden Markram will lead his Proteas into battle against India for glory; so far they remain undefeated throughout this tournament and appear unfazed by pressure.
Misbah ul Haq took over as Pakistan’s test captain following Shahid Afridi and Salman Butt’s resignations due to a spot-fixing scandal. Misbah believes that as long as Pakistan bats well and fields well, everything will work according to plan.
Pakistan has seen their bowling attack improve significantly since the start of this tournament, led by Shan Masood, Hasan Ali and Saim Ayub who all contributed to Pakistan’s semi-final victory against England. Pakistan remains hopeful that miracles may happen to save their faltering World Cup campaign; currently sitting fifth overall and losing five out of their six group matches already, having only won one so far!
